Serious
wagering takes place in Kabul Afghanistan's capital city when it comes to
bird fighting — specifically kowk fighting.
Although
gambling is illegal in Afghanistan, betting on the bouts is
tolerated because this is one of
Afghanistan's cherished traditions.
Kowk are specially-bred fighting partridges
featuring distinct bright
red beaks and
black breast stripes.
The fights
feature bookies and odds makers and handfuls of cash as the
birds fly around, pecking at their
opponents. It is rarely bloody, and the
winner is the
bird that drives the other bird away.
The prized
birds are expensive animals, and owners would not let
these prized possessions be harmed.

“ Ancient
Tamils have enjoyed by inciting Partridges to fight with one another. This was
one of the pastimes in those days.Partridges seen to have been domesticated and
occasionally used for fighting. These birds will fly around and peck with each
other. The winner-bird will remain on the ground when the defeated will run
away.
Sangam works such as Purananuru,
Kalitokai , Perumpanatrupatai and Pattinappalai
refer to this game.
The Partridge
fight is no longer practiced in India but it continues in Afghanistan.
Comparable to these rural games in European countries are the bear baiting and
falconry which are no longer there in
practice because of social and political reasons.” –Editor.
