தொல்தமிழர் அறிவியல் –117 : 40. வடவைத் தீ  - முகாக்கினி

                                      கடலடியில் நிகழும் நில அதிவினால்  பாறைகள் ஒன்றோடொன்று மோதுகின்றன.  கடலடியில் உறங்கும் எரிமலை வெடித்துச் சிதறித் தீக்குழம்பு கடல் பரப்பிற்கு மேலே வெளிக்கிளம்புகிறது. கடல் நடுவே கொழுந்து விட்டி எரியும் தீயைக் கண்ட புலவ்ர், இந்நிகழ்வு அறிவியல் ஆய்வுக்கு உரியது என்ற நோக்கில் பதிவு செய்துள்ளார். கண்ணால் கண்ட காட்சியின் உண்மை என்றாவது ஒருநாள் வெளிப்படும் என்று கருதினார் போலும். இச்செய்தி ஈராயிரம் ஆண்டுகளைக் கடந்து, இன்றைய அறிவியல் 1950 இல் தான் இவ்வுண்மையைக் கண்டு பிடித்தது.

                                A mid-ocean ridge is an underwater mountain system formed by plate tectonics. It consists of various mountains linked in chains, typically having a valley known as a rift running along its spine. This type of oceanic mountain ridge is characteristic of what is known as an oceanic spreading center, which is responsible for seafloor spreading. The production of new seafloor results from mantle upwelling in response to plate spreading; this isentropic upwelling solid mantle material eventually exceeds the solidus and melts. The buoyant melt rises as magma at a linear weakness in the oceanic crust, and emerges as lava, creating new crust upon cooling. A mid-ocean ridge demarcates the boundary between two tectonic plates, and consequently is termed a divergent plate boundary.

                       Fire from the deep ocean-bed and the fountain of water from the watery depth may seem incredible to commoners. But a news item from The Hindu, Trichy Edition dt. 16 – 11 – 2015, speaks about mid-ocean ridges and tectonic plates that erupts magma and lava from under-sea mountain ranges.

                           Comparable to these is that recent occurrences of Tsunami are actually because of a earth quake under the deep waters of oceans.
