Surgery
The passage from a poem
by the Sangam poet Paranar in Patirrupathu speaks of a warrior’s chest
sporadically marked with scars because of sutures once made with the help of
pure needles on the body when it had been wounded because of sharp arrows in
the battle field.
Sushrutha of the 6th
century B.C. is said to have been the most ancient surgeon. No less is the
surgical work seems to have been performed in the Sangam period. Ancient Tamil
Siddhars are also reputed for having handled pathological analysis of human
body before administering their herbo mineral medicines to the patients.”
