Ø The eastern coast of India was a strategic location during the period  of the later Cholas (850 – 1279 AD )
Ø Nagapattinam was an important port that was used for commercial and defence purposes due to  its proximity to Thanjavur and Gangaikondacholapuram, capitals of the Cholas.
Ø List of countries conquered by the Cholas during the period : Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand.
Ø Popular kings in the Chola dynasty, who took expeditions overseas to conquer Southeast Asian countries: Raja Raja Chola, Rajendra Chola, and Kulothunga Chola.
Ø Inscriptions engraved  on the walls of Brihadeeswarar Temple, (Big Temple) in Thanjavur enumerate the list of 16 countries conquered by the Cholas.
Ø Ahead of this, Tamils had trade links with rest of the world since the ancient times ; references are available in Sangam-era works like Pattinappalai and Purananuru which are more than 2,000 years ago.
